Santa Barbara is a cyclist’s paradise, offering scenic coastal views, historic landmarks, and picturesque neighborhoods. Whether you’re a casual rider or an experienced cyclist, exploring the city on two wheels is an incredible way to soak in its beauty. Here are some of the best sites to see on a bike tour in Santa Barbara.
1. Cabrillo Boulevard Bike Path
The Cabrillo Boulevard Bike Path is one of the most scenic routes in Santa Barbara. Stretching along the coastline, this flat, paved path takes you past East Beach, Stearns Wharf, and Leadbetter Beach. It’s the perfect ride for a leisurely tour with stunning ocean views.
2. Stearns Wharf
A must-see landmark, Stearns Wharf is the oldest working wooden wharf in California. Ride your bike along the waterfront and stop at the wharf to enjoy fresh seafood, browse local shops, or take in breathtaking views of the Pacific Ocean.
3. Santa Barbara Mission and Rose Garden
The Old Mission Santa Barbara, founded in 1786, is a historic gem. Its stunning architecture and beautifully manicured rose garden make it a peaceful stop on your tour. Pack a picnic and relax in the garden while admiring this iconic landmark. Our tours can go here upon request. It’s not on the typical tour as it’s a 3 mile ride and we have to cut out a couple other stops to get it in but if interested please tell your guide before the tour begins.
4. State Street Promenade
Cycling down State Street, Santa Barbara’s lively downtown area, is a fun way to experience the city’s vibrant atmosphere. The promenade is lined with charming cafes, boutiques, and historic buildings, making it an excellent spot for a quick break.
5. Butterfly Beach
For a more relaxed coastal ride, head to Butterfly Beach in Montecito. This stunning beach is a favorite among locals and offers breathtaking sunset views. The ride from downtown Santa Barbara to Butterfly Beach is scenic and enjoyable.
6. Shoreline Park
Overlooking the Pacific Ocean, Shoreline Park is a fantastic place to stop for a rest. The park offers picnic areas, walking trails, and incredible views of the Santa Barbara coastline. It’s an ideal spot for snapping photos and soaking in the beauty of the area.
7. Goleta’s Ellwood Mesa and the Monarch Butterfly Grove
If you’re up for a slightly longer ride, head towards Goleta’s Ellwood Mesa, where you’ll find the Monarch Butterfly Grove. During the winter months, thousands of monarch butterflies migrate here, creating a magical sight. The ride includes coastal trails and lush landscapes, making it a rewarding experience. This isn’t on our tour as it’s in Goleta but if you’re renting a bike and want a flat distance ride this is a great spot. You can take the Cabrillo bike path up onto the Mesa, to Cliff drive, Las Positas, Modoc Road and finally to the Obern Bike trail to get you out to Goleta. The Cabrillo bike path and Obern bike trail are dedicated running and bike paths; the rest is road riding.
8. Douglas Family Preserve
For those who enjoy a mix of nature and ocean views, Douglas Family Preserve is a great stop. This open space area offers dirt trails and stunning cliffs overlooking Hendry’s Beach. It’s a peaceful spot to pause and enjoy the serenity of Santa Barbara’s coastline.
9. Arroyo Burro Beach (Hendry’s Beach)
A ride to Hendry’s Beach, also known as Arroyo Burro Beach, is well worth it. This local favorite is a great place to relax, grab a bite at the Boathouse restaurant, and watch surfers catch waves.
10. Santa Barbara Wine Country
For those interested in a longer cycling adventure, head out to the Santa Ynez Valley to explore Santa Barbara’s renowned wine country. The rolling hills, scenic vineyards, and charming towns
like Los Olivos and Solvang offer an unforgettable experience for wine lovers and cyclists alike. Most don’t ride here but drive and then ride in the wine county on the rolling hills. It can be hot back there in the summer.
